Research indicates that the average boat owner uses their boat for 30-35 days a year. So what happens for the other 330 days a year? Adopting that average, boat owners pay for berthage, insurance and maintenance 365 days a year yet only use the boat 10% of the time. Would those same people buy a house and only live in it 3 days a month? If your lifestyle dictates a scenario like the above then you really should consider fractional ownership. Let’s face it, a luxury boat will come at a luxury price and if you can envisage only having the luxury of using it for a limited time then you may want to use the fractional rationale; spread the cost of the initial capital expenditure and the ongoing berthage, insurance and maintenance across four cheque books instead of one.
